Description of the Study:
- Title: Relationship Between Amantadine and COVID-19 in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis.
- Principal Investigator: Albert Cortés Borra.
- Co-Investigators: Dr. José Ramón Martínez Riera, José Manuel Viturro Iglesias, Dr. Fernando Martínez Cuervo.

Objectives of the Study:
Principal Objective: This research aims to demonstrate that amantadine exerts a protective factor against COVID-19 in patients who have been under treatment with the aforementioned antiviral to alleviate the symptoms of their neurological disease.
Secondary Objective: Open therapeutic and prophylactic alternatives to COVID-19 infection.

Patients with Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis have amantadine among the multiple therapeutic arsenals available under the supervision of their specialist. However, why not study if amantadine could also be used to treat COVID-19?
Amantadine is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and similar conditions. Besides, it is also used to control movement problems that are side effects of certain medications used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, it can also prevent symptoms of influenza A virus infection and to treat respiratory infections caused by Type A influenza virus.
In fact, Amantadine is in a class of medications called adamantanes. In other words, it is believed to work by controlling movement problems by increasing the amount of dopamine in certain parts of the body. Summing up, it works by stopping the spread of influenza A virus in the body.
